A heartbreaking tragedy occurred when a boat carrying migrants from Mauritania, including 44 Pakistanis, capsized while attempting to reach Spain. The boat, which departed on January 2, 2025, was part of a larger migration effort across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands. Moroccan authorities rescued 36 people on January 14, but 50 individuals are feared dead.

Walking Borders, a migrant rights group, reported the boat’s disappearance and had informed authorities six days prior to the rescue. The group also highlighted the growing death toll among migrants attempting to reach Spain, with over 10,000 lives lost in 2024.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep condolences and demanded a report from relevant authorities. The Foreign Ministry confirmed the deaths and assured that the embassy was in contact with local authorities for further assistance to the survivors.
The tragic incident has prompted calls for urgent international action to prevent further loss of life along the perilous migration route.
