Arrest of Arab Actor Maisa Abdel Hadi by Israeli Police Sparks Controversy

A prominent Palestinian actress, Maisa Abdel Hadi, has been arrested on suspicion of promoting terrorism through a social media post related to Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel.

She is among a growing number of Palestinian Israelis who have been apprehended due to their social media posts discussing the devastating conflict. Hadi allegedly shared an image of a bulldozer breaching the fence separating the Gaza Strip and Israel during the Hamas attack on October 7, which resulted in numerous casualties. In her caption, she wrote, “Let’s go Berlin-style,” referring to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Her lawyer, Jaafar Farah, disclosed that she is accused of endorsing terrorism. Hadi, a 37-year-old actress who has appeared in various series, films, and plays, is not the only Palestinian-Israeli to face such consequences for expressing solidarity with Gaza on social media.

Over the course of the recent hostilities between Israel and Hamas, which caused the deaths of thousands, there have been reports of Israel’s Arab minority members being fired from their jobs, expelled from educational institutions, and detained for voicing their support for Gaza residents. Palestinian-Israelis constitute around 20% of Israel’s population.
