Bangladesh Awaits Interim Government While the Army Chief is Set to Meet Protesters

On Tuesday, Bangladesh’s Army Chief will meet with student protest leaders as the nation awaits the formation of a new government, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and flight amid a violent uprising that resulted in numerous deaths.

The student leaders, who initially protested job quotas and later demanded Hasina’s resignation, have requested an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus as chief adviser. They have expressed refusal to accept any government not recommended by them or one supported by the army.

Yunus, known for his work with Grameen Bank and his Nobel Peace Prize win in 2006, was recently charged with embezzlement, which he denies. He has agreed to the students’ proposal but has not yet commented further.

General Wakeruz Zaman, Bangladesh’s Army Chief, is scheduled to meet the protest organizers at noon local time (0600 GMT) on Tuesday.

He had previously announced Hasina’s resignation and the formation of an interim government in a televised statement, and has since consulted with major political parties, excluding Hasina’s Awami League.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin also stated that the interim government will soon hold elections and announced the immediate release of opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia, who has been in hospital after a conviction in a corruption case.

Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh since 2009, arrived in India on Monday and was reportedly taken to a “safe house” with plans to possibly travel to the UK.
