Cyclone Michaung Hits India: 9 Dead, Thousands Evacuated

Severe cyclone Michaung has caused significant damage as it made landfall near Bapatla on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, resulting in at least nine reported fatalities and the evacuation of 9,454 individuals.

The cyclone, moving northwards parallel to the coast, is expected to complete its crossing within the next two hours, according to the Amaravati Meteorological Centre. Gales near the storm’s center are gusting up to 110 km/h, with intensities reaching 90–100 km/h.

Heavy rains prior to the cyclone’s landfall led to flooding in southern India, claiming nine lives, including a four-year-old boy. The child died in Tirupati district due to a collapsing wall, while eight others lost their lives in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu state.

In response to the cyclone’s threat, authorities evacuated 9,454 people from seven districts to 211 relief camps. The affected districts include Konaseema, Kakinada, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, and Tirupati. The state government organized the evacuation efforts, relocating residents and distributing 10,251 food packets and 18,068 water packets to those affected.Top of Form
