Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest airports globally, will eventually shut down and be redeveloped into a large-scale real estate project, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths announced. The transition will take place once Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) reaches full capacity.
Griffiths explained that operating both airports long-term makes little sense given their close proximity. Instead, all services will gradually shift to DWC, which is undergoing a $35 billion expansion aimed at making it the world’s largest airport.

DXB, opened in 1960 and handling over 92 million passengers last year, faces costly infrastructure challenges, prompting plans to repurpose its land. Officials expect the complete transition to take place over the next two decades.
The redevelopment is expected to transform Dubai’s urban landscape, much like Hong Kong’s shift after closing Kai Tak Airport.
