Human rights groups have raised alarms about numerous unmarked graves found in Kashmir, which may be linked to enforced disappearances. The United Nations has repeatedly cautioned India about human rights abuses in the area.

In his message for the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that families have a right to know the fate of their missing loved ones according to international human rights laws.

The Kashmir Media Service reports that thousands of Kashmiris have faced enforced disappearances over the past 34 years, with the situation deteriorating since August 6, 2019, when India revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
