Israel’s defense ministry has announced a significant investment of $530 million to accelerate the development of its laser air defense system, known as “Iron Beam.” This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s defense capabilities against aerial threats, particularly drones and projectiles fired by Hezbollah amid ongoing conflicts in the region.
The deal, valued at approximately 2 billion shekels, aims to expand the procurement of the Iron Beam system, which is expected to complement existing defense mechanisms such as the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome has proven effective but has struggled to intercept every projectile, leading to civilian and military casualties.

The defense ministry plans to collaborate with leading defense companies Rafael and Elbit in the development of Iron Beam. Ministry director general Eyal Zamir expressed optimism, stating that the new system is anticipated to enter operational service within a year, further bolstering Israel’s multi-layered air defense network.
This funding comes on the heels of a new U.S. military aid package worth $8.7 billion, of which $5.2 billion is allocated for air defense systems, including advancements in high-powered laser technology. The Iron Beam system represents a significant step in modernizing Israel’s defense strategy against increasingly sophisticated threats.
