Japan’s Foreign Minister, Takeshi Iwaya, expressed serious concerns to his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, regarding China’s increasing military activity, particularly in the East China Sea and around Taiwan. Iwaya stressed that Japan is closely monitoring the situation, highlighting China’s recent large-scale maritime drills near Japan’s southern islands and the South China Sea.
The two ministers discussed various security issues, including the disputed Senkaku Islands, which China claims but Japan administers. Iwaya also raised concerns about China’s unilateral resource development in the region.

During the three-hour talks in Beijing, the two sides agreed to arrange a visit by Wang Yi to Japan in the coming year for high-level economic discussions. However, strained relations persist due to territorial disputes and military tensions.
Iwaya also addressed the case of a Japanese citizen detained by China on espionage charges, urging transparency and the swift release of the detainee.
