Japan Struck by Two Powerful Earthquakes

On Thursday, Japan’s southern Kyushu island was hit by two significant earthquakes, measuring 6.9 and 7.1 in magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. Tsunami waves up to one meter were reported or expected to reach coastal areas of Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

The first quake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers, followed by a second at 25 kilometers. In response, the Japanese government has formed a special task force. Japan, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location on four major tectonic plates.

Despite frequent earthquakes, Japan, with its population of about 125 million, generally experiences minimal damage due to advanced construction practices and stringent building codes. However, a major earthquake on January 1 resulted in at least 260 deaths and significant damage from building collapses, fires, and infrastructure failures during New Year’s celebrations.
