Kashmir Martyrs Day Is Being Commemorated Today

Kashmir Martyrs Day, observed on July 13, commemorates the events of 1931 when 22 Kashmiri Muslims were killed by Dogra forces in Srinagar. This day has been marked for 93 years.

The incident happened during a protest against the trial of Abdul Qadeer Khan. Police opened fire when demonstrators attempted to call for prayers, killing the first muezzin.

As others tried to continue the call, they were also shot, resulting in 22 deaths and over 100 injuries.

The martyrs were laid to rest near the shrine of Khawaja Bahauddin Naqshbandi, now called Martyrs’ Graveyard.

In 2019, the Indian government under Prime Minister Modi revoked the official holiday status of July 13 in Kashmir.

Despite ongoing tensions, human rights organizations globally continue to protest against alleged oppression in Indian-administered Kashmir.
