Landslide in Northern Ethiopia Leaves 23 Dead, 8 Injured

A landslide in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, specifically in the northern Gondar zone, has resulted in the deaths of 23 people and injuries to eight others, according to local reports on Monday.

The state-owned Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) reported that the disaster displaced 2,700 individuals, destroyed 1,775 hectares of crops, and damaged 48 homes across 11 rural districts.

A task force has been established by the zone’s Communication Department to assist those impacted by the landslide. This tragic event follows a previous landslide on August 24, 2024, in the Abna Kebele area of Tselemti district in the North Western Tigray zone, where 10 people died and six remain missing.

Authorities had been on high alert due to warnings from the Ethiopian Meteorology Institute about the heightened risk of landslides caused by expected heavy rainfall.

The current rainy season has been particularly destructive for several regions across the country, with landslides affecting multiple districts in both northern and southern areas.

Last month, a series of landslides in the Gofa zone of Ethiopia’s southern region claimed nearly 260 lives and displaced more than 15,000 people.
