Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has expressed her disappointment after Dr. Mahrang Baloch, leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, was barred from attending a U.S. event. Baloch, who was recently featured in Time Magazine’s 2024 TIME100 Next list for her peaceful advocacy for Baloch rights, was prevented from boarding a flight at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.
Baloch alleged that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) offloaded her from her flight to the U.S., which had a layover in Dubai, where she was due to attend a gala organized by the magazine. The incident has sparked concerns about the freedom of movement for activists in Pakistan, particularly those who speak out for regional rights.

Malala, who is an outspoken advocate for human rights, voiced her concern over the incident, stating that barring peaceful activists from such platforms undermines efforts to bring attention to marginalized communities. Many are now calling for a review of such travel restrictions imposed on activists like Baloch.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, as Dr. Mahrang Baloch’s inclusion in the prestigious TIME100 Next list highlights her growing international recognition for her efforts in advocating for Baloch rights through peaceful means.
Malala Tweeted:
Mahrang Baloch’s activism for Baloch people should be recognised, not denied a platform. I am disappointed she could not be honoured in person for her advocacy. But I know this will not deter her from continuing to speak up and protest peacefully for human rights.
