Massive Lithium Discovery in US Could Reshape Global Supply

US

A newly confirmed lithium deposit in the McDermitt Caldera, located on the Oregon-Nevada border, is being hailed as one of the largest in the world. Recent geological assessments estimate the site holds between 20 to 40 million metric tonnes of lithium, potentially surpassing Bolivia’s famed salt flats.

With lithium demand expected to skyrocket in the coming decades, the discovery could significantly boost the US battery supply chain. The Thacker Pass project in Nevada, backed by major investments, is already set to begin extraction in 2026, while exploration on the Oregon side continues.

Despite its massive potential, extracting lithium from claystone presents technical and environmental challenges. Unlike salt brine operations, this deposit requires chemical leaching methods that could impact local ecosystems. Indigenous groups and environmentalists have also raised concerns over its effect on sacred land and wildlife.

As the US seeks to reduce reliance on foreign lithium sources, the McDermitt Caldera find could be a game-changer. However, experts emphasize the need for responsible extraction practices to balance economic benefits with environmental sustainability.
