Morocco permits inmates to receive food baskets from families during Eid Al Adha, fostering a “spiritual atmosphere” for celebrations

Morocco’s General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) has announced that prisoners will be allowed to receive meal baskets from their families during the occasion of Eid Al Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. The measure, which exempts religious holidays from the ban on meal baskets, aims to ensure that inmates can celebrate the holiday in a “spiritual atmosphere.” Families of inmates will be able to bring them food for a week, starting from the second day of Eid Al Adha.

This initiative is expected to strengthen family bonds and have a positive impact on inmates’ mentality. Food baskets can also be provided by diplomatic and consular representatives for foreign detainees. However, the baskets must only contain cooked meals that can be consumed within two days, and other items such as clothes and blankets will not be allowed. Face-to-face visits will not be permitted during this period. The DGAPR has urged families to comply with the conditions and warned that any violations will result in the prohibition of meal baskets and legal consequences. Prison institutions will facilitate communication between inmates and their families to inform them about the operation.
