Muhsin Hendricks, known as the world’s first openly gay imam, was shot and killed near Gqeberha, South Africa, police confirmed. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack, but LGBTQ+ rights groups have called for a probe into a possible hate crime.

According to police, Hendricks was traveling in a car when another vehicle blocked their path. Two masked attackers stepped out and fired multiple shots before fleeing. A video circulating online appears to show the targeted shooting, and authorities have urged witnesses to come forward.

Hendricks, a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in Islam, had received threats in the past. He founded the Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Cape Town, offering a safe space for queer Muslims and marginalized women to practice their faith. His work was also highlighted in the 2022 documentary The Radical.

With South Africa’s high crime rate, police have yet to confirm whether the killing was linked to his activism. However, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) has urged a thorough investigation, expressing deep concern over the nature of the attack.
