Over 50 Individuals Missing In Nepal As Landslide Sweeps Two Buses Into River

Dozens are missing after a landslide swept two buses into a swollen river in Nepal during heavy monsoon rains.

The buses fell off a road into the Trishuli River near Simaltal, approximately 74 miles west of Kathmandu, around 3 a.m. They were on a major highway connecting the capital to southern Nepal.

Rabi Lamichhane, the home minister, informed parliament that 51 passengers remain unaccounted for, with over 500 rescue personnel deployed for the search. Initially, 62 people were reported missing, but this number was adjusted after gathering passenger details from bus operators.

Three passengers have been rescued and are receiving treatment in the hospital, according to government administrator Khima Nanada Bhusal. The survivors managed to jump from the bus and swim to the riverbank, where local residents rescued them and transported them to a nearby hospital. Among the missing passengers are seven Indian nationals, according to a district official.

Local authorities announced they would resume the search in the morning, which has been hindered by continuous rain and additional landslides. A third bus was also struck by a landslide on the same highway on Friday morning, resulting in the driver’s death.

Additionally, 17 people have died and three more have been injured in various districts due to landslides in the 24 hours leading up to the bus incident, according to Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane. This includes 11 fatalities when landslides destroyed three houses in Kaski district, about 93 miles west of the capital, as reported by police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki.

Since mid-June, at least 91 people have died due to ongoing torrential monsoon rains causing landslides and flooding across Nepal’s mountainous regions. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed deep sadness over the incidents in a social media post, and the government plans to ban night bus operations in areas with inadequate weather forecasting.
