Red Warnings Issued as Storm Éowyn Approaches the UK and Ireland

The UK and Ireland are bracing for Storm Éowyn, which has prompted rare red weather warnings in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with winds expected to reach up to 100mph (161km/h).

On Thursday, millions of residents received emergency alerts urging them to stay indoors and prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions. In response, schools in Northern Ireland and central Scotland have been closed, and transport services, including ScotRail and major airlines, have suspended operations for safety reasons.

“This is a serious and dangerous storm,” stated First Minister John Swinney, advising against all non-essential travel in red warning areas. In Ireland, Met Éireann has forecasted “hurricane-force winds,” and the Isle of Man has issued its highest weather alert. Coastal regions are at significant risk of storm surges and flooding, and power outages and damage to infrastructure are expected. Emergency services are on high alert.

Travel across the UK will be heavily impacted, with rail and air services warning of cancellations and delays. The AA has advised motorists to reconsider their travel plans, citing fallen trees and debris on roads. Power cuts are anticipated, with some areas facing outages lasting several days.

Schools in Scotland, along with the Scottish Parliament, will close on Friday, with similar closures in place in Ireland and the Isle of Man, where emergency teams have been mobilized. Amber and yellow weather warnings extend across the UK, with predictions of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential snow in some areas. Coastal regions, in particular, are vulnerable to large waves and flooding, and residents are advised to secure outdoor items and prepare for power disruptions.

Storm Éowyn, the fifth named storm of the season, is being driven by a powerful jet stream across the Atlantic, which has intensified the system following a recent cold snap in North America.

Preparation for Storm Éowyn The Met Office has urged residents to:

  • Avoid non-essential travel
  • Secure outdoor items
  • Charge devices and prepare emergency kits
  • Stay informed with updates and follow local authority guidance

As Storm Éowyn approaches, authorities are prioritizing safety and are ready to respond to emergencies swiftly.
