Tokyo Evacuates and Cancels Fights Ahead of Typhoon Ampil

On Friday, Japan grounded hundreds of flights and advised nearly 10,000 households near Tokyo to evacuate as Typhoon Ampil caused power outages during a major summer holiday week.

Typhoon Ampil, classified as “very strong” by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), was located off Japan’s Pacific coast in the morning and is expected to move towards the Kanto region, including Tokyo, later in the day.

With wind speeds reaching 45 meters per second and gusts up to 60 meters per second, the JMA warned of severe winds that could cause injuries from debris and overturn moving trucks.

Mobara City issued evacuation orders for about 18,500 residents, and several other cities opened evacuation centers. Power outages affected over 2,000 households in the Kanto area, while major airlines, including ANA and Japan Airlines, canceled numerous domestic and international flights, impacting tens of thousands of passengers. Additionally, all Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya were canceled.
