Tragic Lightning Strikes Claim 24 Lives in India’s Gujarat

Over the past 48 hours, government officials reported 24 fatalities from lightning strikes and approximately 23 individuals injured in rain-associated incidents within the western Indian state of Gujarat. As the rains persist into Monday morning, the region remains affected by these unfortunate occurrences.

Gujarat bore the brunt of severe weather conditions as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms lashed the state on Sunday and Monday. State government data indicated that certain regions experienced a deluge of up to 144 millimetres (5.7 inches) of rainfall within a 24-hour period, culminating on Monday morning.

The relentless downpour wreaked havoc, causing significant damage to homes and resulting in the loss of livestock across the state. Addressing the aftermath, Gujarat’s Agriculture Minister, Raghavij Patel, announced plans for an immediate survey to evaluate the extent of the damage incurred. Patel affirmed that compensations would be disbursed to affected individuals following the assessment’s conclusion.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts predicting continued rainfall in select areas of the state throughout Monday.

The havoc wreaked by the inclement weather has prompted swift government action to ascertain the scale of the destruction. Authorities are gearing up to conduct comprehensive assessments and provide necessary support to those affected by the adverse weather conditions gripping Gujarat.
