Trump lifts hold on bombs for Israel despite civilian concerns

Trump

US President Donald Trump has authorized the release of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, overturning a hold placed by former President Joe Biden due to fears of civilian casualties in Gaza. Trump confirmed the decision aboard Air Force One, stating, “They paid for them, and they’ve been waiting for them for a long time.”

The munitions, known for their ability to penetrate fortified structures, had been withheld by Biden’s administration over concerns about their use in densely populated regions like Gaza’s Rafah area. Trump defended his move, emphasizing Israel’s purchase and the delay caused by the previous administration.

Since October 2023, the US has committed billions of dollars in military aid to Israel. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 47,000 deaths and the displacement of nearly 2.3 million people, intensifying calls for an arms embargo.

Despite mounting criticism and protests, the shipment was released. Trump also suggested neighboring countries like Jordan and Egypt accommodate displaced Palestinians, signaling upcoming discussions with regional leaders.
