Uganda Reports First Ebola Death Amid New Outbreak

Ebola

Uganda’s Ministry of Health has confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in the capital, Kampala, following the death of a 32-year-old nurse. This marks the country’s first reported Ebola fatality since 2023. The victim, who died at Mulago National Referral Hospital, tested positive for the Sudan Ebola virus strain.

Health authorities are currently tracing 44 contacts, including 30 healthcare workers, to contain the highly contagious virus. A vaccination drive targeting those exposed is set to begin immediately, while officials urge the public to report any suspected cases.

The outbreak comes amid regional health concerns, with neighboring Tanzania and Rwanda recently battling Marburg virus outbreaks. Given Kampala’s dense population and status as a regional transit hub, containment efforts pose a major challenge.

Uganda has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks since 2000, with the last one in 2022 causing 55 deaths out of 143 cases. Health authorities have intensified emergency response efforts, including contact tracing and laboratory testing, to curb the spread of the virus.
