The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis is in critical condition following a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a complicated lung infection.
The 88-year-old pontiff remains conscious and is receiving high-flow oxygen therapy to support his breathing. Additionally, he has undergone blood transfusions due to low platelet counts. He has now spent a week hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Doctors have highlighted the primary concern as the potential development of sepsis, a serious blood infection that can worsen pneumonia. However, as of the latest medical assessments, no signs of sepsis have been detected.
Pope Francis is under constant medical supervision. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli Hospital, stated that the Pope is aware of the risks and is responding to a combination of antibiotics, cortisone treatment, and supportive medical care.
Amid growing speculation, the Vatican has dismissed any possibility of the Pope stepping down, emphasizing that there is no canonical framework for a resignation due to medical incapacity. While Pope Francis previously revealed that he had a resignation letter prepared in case he became unable to fulfill his duties, he remains actively engaged in his responsibilities.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin also addressed recent rumors regarding secret meetings or a possible resignation, urging people to focus on the Pope’s recovery rather than spreading misinformation.
The Pope’s condition remains serious, and his medical team anticipates that he will remain in the hospital for at least another week as they continue monitoring and adjusting his treatment.
