In a New Year’s speech, China’s President Xi Jinping declared that “no one can stop” the unification of Taiwan with China, reaffirming Beijing’s claim over the self-ruled island. Xi emphasized that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are “one family” and that historical reunification is inevitable.

Beijing has intensified military pressure on Taiwan in recent years, conducting several large-scale drills, including the most recent ones in December. While China has not renounced the use of force to achieve reunification, Taiwan’s defense officials remain vigilant.
Taiwan remains a significant point of tension in US-China relations, as Washington is Taiwan’s largest arms supplier, despite not officially recognizing it diplomatically. The situation could further escalate with Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, as he has promised to impose more tariffs on China.
