The groundbreaking ceremony for “the Project for the Extension of Maternal and Child Health Care Facility in Sindh” took place at Liaquat University Hospital Jamshoro.
Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho (Minister for Health and Population Welfare), Zulfiqar Ali Shah (Secretary, Department of Sindh), Nakagawa Yasushi (Acting Consul-General of Japan), and HaraTsuyoshi (Senior Representative, JICA Pakistan Office) were among those in attendance.
A mother and child healthcare centre will be built at Liaquat University Hospital in Jamshoro thanks to a grant from the Japanese government worth around 3.445 billion yen.

The new hospital will contain 98 beds and 30 cots, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit, a maternal and foetal intensive care unit, outpatient departments, an operation theatre, an obstetrics ward, and a laboratory.
The facility’s construction is expected to be completed in April 2025. The center’s establishment will significantly boost access to maternity and child health services in the area.
With 420 neonatal intensive care unit admissions per year, we anticipate that the hospital will benefit 63,000 outpatients. Sindh has a low number of care facilities for moms and newborns who have problems.
This project would not only relieve the strain on tertiary hospitals in Karachi and Hyderabad, but it will also provide opportunities for families from all throughout Sindh’s southern region, with increased accessibility and a better chance of saving lives.
The Government of Japan and JICA place a high premium on maternal and child health in Pakistan’s health sector policy and pledge to continue supporting the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
