Netflix Co-Founder Criticized for Donating to Kamala Harris Campaign

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings is facing criticism on social media related to his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign. Hastings, a Stanford graduate, is well-known for his contributions to the entertainment industry and frequent appearances at his alma mater and in Netflix videos. However, his recent political donation has sparked controversy.

In July 2024, Hastings drew attention for his $7 million donation to a super PAC backing Harris’ presidential bid. This sizable contribution, the largest single campaign donation he has made, has led some Netflix subscribers to threaten canceling their subscriptions. The backlash is aimed at Hastings personally rather than Netflix, which did not contribute to any campaigns in 2024.

While Netflix subscribers have previously voiced discontent over price increases, password sharing policies, and content quality, this recent discontent is focused on Hastings’ political affiliations.

Hastings, who co-founded Netflix in 1997 with Marc Randolph and currently serves as Executive Chairman, has a history of substantial political donations. Along with his wife, Patty Quillin, Hastings has donated over $20 million to the Democratic Party, including up to $1.5 million to Biden’s 2020 campaign.
