Saudi Arabia Contemplates First Miss Universe Contestant

Saudi Arabia Contemplates First Miss Universe Contestant

It’s a significant moment for Saudi Arabia as it could potentially send its first contestant to the Miss Universe competition this year. Maria Jose Unda, the coordinator of international relations for the Miss Universe Organisation, confirmed that they are in the process of selecting a candidate to represent Saudi Arabia, with a decision expected very soon. This announcement follows the buzz created by Saudi model Rumy al-Qahtani, who claimed to have been selected to represent Saudi Arabia at Miss Universe in a social media post.

However, Miss Universe clarified shortly after Qahtani’s announcement that no selection process had taken place in Saudi Arabia, labeling her post as “false and misleading.” Despite this, Qahtani stated that negotiations were ongoing for her participation and hoped for a positive outcome.

If Saudi Arabia does send a contestant to Miss Universe, it would mark another step in the country’s efforts to change its image, particularly regarding women’s rights. While significant strides have been made, including lifting the ban on driving and relaxing clothing regulations, challenges remain, with human rights activists raising concerns about discriminatory laws.

Qahtani, in her interview with AFP, mentioned facing unexpected questions about Saudi Arabia during her participation in pageants and managing potential backlash, including negative comments about her clothing choices and posing with the Saudi flag. Despite this, she remains determined, with her mother expressing hope that her daughter’s journey will inspire other Saudi girls.

As negotiations continue and the selection process unfolds, all eyes are on Saudi Arabia as it navigates this potential milestone in its representation on the global stage of beauty pageants.
