Government Announces Major Relief for Motorcyclists

On Monday, the Punjab government introduced significant relief measures for motorcycle license applicants. CTO Lahore Amara Athar announced that motorcyclists no longer need a learner’s permit to apply for a license. The previous 42-day waiting period for a limited-duration motorbike license has been abolished, allowing citizens to take the driving test and receive their license simultaneously with the learner’s permit.

The new facility aims to save time and encourage compliance with traffic laws. Driving without a license will incur a Rs 2,000 fine. The new system allows licenses for one, two, or five years, and cash payments at centers have been removed; applicants now only need their CNIC.

To ensure transparency, audio and video recordings of the license issuance process are now mandatory. Additionally, the Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) has intensified efforts to enforce traffic laws, penalizing nearly 10,000 motorcyclists for not wearing helmets. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety, as helmets are crucial for reducing fatal injuries in motorcycle accidents. In August, PHP inspected over 200,000 vehicles in the Multan region, issuing over 70,000 challans for traffic violations.
