In a dramatic turn of events late Monday night, 216 prisoners escaped from Karachi’s District Jail Malir, commonly known as “Bacha Jail,” amid a chaotic situation reportedly triggered by tremors in the city.
Authorities say the inmates, many of whom were already outside their barracks, exploited the confusion to overpower jail staff. A violent confrontation ensued, and heavy gunfire was heard in and around the jail, sparking panic in nearby residential areas.
