NADRA App Shows Strange Feature Allowing Deceased Individuals to ‘Cancel ID Cards’

NADRA App Shows Strange Feature Allowing Deceased Individuals to 'Cancel ID Cards'

Users of the NADRA mobile app have discovered an unusual feature that seemingly allows deceased individuals to cancel their own identity cards.

The feature, labelled “Cancel Identity Due to Death,” provides two options: “Myself” and “My blood relatives.” While the second option allows immediate family members to apply for ID card cancellation, the “Myself” option has confused users.

Reports suggest that selecting the “Myself” option triggers a liveness check using facial recognition technology. This process is designed to verify that the person applying is alive and matches NADRA’s official records. Users have questioned how a deceased individual could complete this procedure.

A NADRA spokesperson clarified that the ID card cancellation service is intended only for relatives of the deceased. However, the spokesperson did not explain why the app includes the “Myself” option or why it requires a liveness check for someone who has passed away.

The confusing design of the NADRA app has sparked debates about government mobile applications and their user-friendliness. Many users called it an example of poor app development and oversight.

Experts note that government apps often lack thorough testing and proper supervision during development. Such flaws can lead to confusing or unusable features, as seen in the current NADRA mobile app.

So far, NADRA has not issued an official statement addressing the presence of the “Myself” option. Users and tech analysts hope the authority will clarify the feature and improve the app’s design to prevent further confusion.

The incident highlights the importance of proper app development and testing, especially for essential services like national ID management. Authorities are urged to review the NADRA app and remove or correct any misleading features.
