Pre-Ramazan Rush Grips Peshawar Amid Rising Prices

As the holy month of Ramazan approaches, Peshawar’s markets are witnessing a significant surge in activity as locals scramble to stock up on essential groceries. Shoppers are busy purchasing pulses, rice, ghee, sugar, and other staple food items in preparation for the month-long fasting period.

However, the rising inflation is casting a shadow over the shopping season, as consumers grapple with the steep increase in prices. Many buyers are limiting their purchases, unable to afford large quantities due to the erosion of their purchasing power. The skyrocketing costs are expected to lead to a notable decline in Ramazan shopping this year.

Traffic congestion in Peshawar’s old walled city has also become a major issue. The heavy influx of shoppers has caused long vehicle queues in markets such as Ashraf Road, further affecting the flow of traffic on the GT Road, where parking has become a significant challenge. This sudden rush is making it increasingly difficult for motorists to navigate the bustling streets.

As usual, prices of essential items like chicken, vegetables, and fruits are steadily climbing with the onset of Ramazan. Hoarders are reportedly active, attempting to create artificial shortages, particularly in meat products. With beef prices already on the rise, there are growing concerns about a potential meat crisis during the holy month.
