Today, Wahab and Naeem are running for mayor

PAKISTAN’S KARACHI: Karachi’s mayor and deputy mayor will be elected by a show of hands today (Thursday) at the Karachi Arts Council.

Elected members of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council would vote openly rather than secretly for Murtaza Wahab of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

Salman Abdullah Murad of the PPP and Saifur Rehman of the JI are running for the job of deputy mayor.

In addition, today is the election day for the chairman and vice-chairperson of the nine town municipal corporations. In 11 towns, the candidates for chairperson and vice-chairperson have already been elected unopposed.

Because of the anticipated rain in Karachi, the Election Commission has assigned the Arts Council of Pakistan’s auditorium as the polling station rather than the KMC Building. Voters must arrive at the polling place by 10:30 a.m. with their original CNICs. After 10:30 a.m., the doors will be closed and the show of hands will begin.

Inside the auditorium, the media will not be permitted to cover the election process.

The names of voters will be called in the Urdu alphabet, and the mayoral election will be held first, followed by the deputy mayoral election.

Votes for each candidate will be tallied separately, with a record of the count kept in a separate register. The winner will be determined by the amount of support received from individuals in the audience. Rioting or obstruction within the voting place shall be sternly prosecuted. It is also illegal for political parties, candidates, and polling agents to espouse views critical of Pakistan’s ideology, judiciary, or armed forces.
