Swedish Police Detain 12 People Over Burning Quran in Public

In Malmo, Sweden, a protest took a disturbing turn on Sunday as tensions flared, leading to arrests and detentions. The protest, orchestrated by Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee known for his Islamophobic views, saw around 200 people gathered in the city’s central square to witness the desecration of the Holy Quran.

Salwan Momika has previously engaged in acts of burning the Islamic holy book, sparking outrage not only in Sweden but also in the Middle East and among Muslim countries. This time, his actions triggered a “violent riot,” according to Swedish Police, which erupted around 1:45 PM (local time).

While the main event ended when Momika left, a number of attendees stayed behind, resulting in several arrests and detentions. Eyewitness accounts and video footage revealed that some protesters hurled stones at Momika, while others attempted to breach police barriers. One individual even tried to block a police car transporting Momika.

Salwan Momika’s actions have not only incited local emotions but have also strained diplomatic relations between Sweden and several Middle Eastern nations. In July, following similar protests, the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad was targeted twice by demonstrators.

Despite the controversy, the Swedish government reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of speech but also condemned the disrespect shown to the Holy Quran.
