WhatsApp is set to launch a new version of its status update feature, inspired by Instagram Notes. The feature allows users to post short text updates that their contacts can view.
The update gives users a chance to share what they are doing or provide a reason why they may not be available to chat. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, recommends using the space to start conversations or give quick updates to contacts.
Interestingly, the โAboutโ feature, which allows short text updates, is not entirely new. WhatsApp originally introduced it before focusing on secure messaging. With this relaunch, the platform is giving the โAboutโ status more visibility than before.
Usersโ status updates will now appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on profiles. Additionally, contacts can reply directly to someoneโs โAboutโ status within the chat, making interactions easier and more immediate.
Similar to Instagram Notes, WhatsAppโs new โAboutโ status will disappear by default after 24 hours. Users can, however, adjust the timer to make it vanish sooner or stay longer. Privacy options allow users to show their status to either all contacts or a selected group.
While the feature is currently simpler than Instagram Notes, which supports short looping videos and music sharing, WhatsApp may add enhancements in the future if the feature becomes popular.
Meta confirmed that the WhatsApp โAboutโ status will begin rolling out to mobile users starting this week. The company hopes the feature will encourage more engagement and make WhatsApp profiles more interactive.
This move highlights WhatsAppโs focus on improving social interactions on its platform, providing a lightweight way for users to communicate and share updates with friends and family.
