Latest Party Position: PML-N Becomes Largest Party in National Assembly After By-Polls

The recent by-elections have reshaped Pakistanโ€™s political landscape, giving the PML-N a stronger position in the National Assembly. With major victories across the country, the PML-N has now emerged as the largest parliamentary party, reducing its dependence on coalition partners.

PML-N becomes largest bloc in the lower house

After winning multiple seats in the by-elections, the PML-N now holds 132 seats in the 336-member National Assembly. A simple majority requires 169 members. With support from its allied parties, the ruling party now enjoys the backing of 170 lawmakers, enabling smoother legislative processes.

This new strength allows the PML-N to operate more independently, especially after months of relying heavily on the PPP for crucial parliamentary support.

Partyโ€™s reduced reliance on major coalition partners

Before the latest electoral gains, the PPP played a major role in helping the government maintain majority support. The by-election results have changed that equation, giving the ruling party more leverage in policy matters.

The updated coalition strength includes support from several allied parties:

  • MQM: 22 seats
  • PML-Q: 5 seats
  • IPP: 4 seats
  • PML-Z: 1 seat
  • BAP: 1 seat
  • National Party: 1 seat
  • Independent members backing PML-N: 4

This coalition gives the government a stable majority above the required threshold.

PML-N sweeps National Assembly contests

The party won six National Assembly seats in the by-elections. In NA-18 Haripur, Babar Nawaz Khan secured a major victory against a PTI-backed contender. In NA-96 Jaranwala, Bilal Badar Chaudhry achieved a strong lead, while Hafiz Noman won in NA-129 Lahore.

Other wins came from NA-143 Chichawatni, NA-185, and NA-144, further boosting the partyโ€™s national standing.

Dominant performance in Punjab Assembly

PML-N also performed strongly in the Punjab Assembly by-elections, winning six out of seven seats. Victories came from PP-203 Chichawatni, PP-115 Faisalabad, PP-87 Mianwali, PP-116 Faisalabad, PP-73 Sargodha, and PP-98 Faisalabad. The only seat won by the PPP was PP-269 Muzaffargarh.
