The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved additional financing to strengthen water resources and irrigation systems in Balochistan. The funding will complete critical project components delayed due to budget constraints.
Key initiatives include the Churi Infiltration Gallery subproject, development of the Siri Toi Dam command area, and watershed management activities. These measures aim to improve irrigation efficiency, reduce soil erosion, and promote sustainable water use.
An innovative piped water distribution network will be introduced in the Siri Toi command area. The system promises lower water losses, better service delivery, and improved efficiency compared to traditional open-channel irrigation.
“The ongoing project, now with additional financing, focuses on the Zhob and Mula river basins,” said ADB Country Director for Pakistan, Emma Fan. “It supports livelihoods and creates economic opportunities, particularly for women in agriculture.”
Once completed, the Siri Toi Dam will provide 36 million cubic meters of water, significantly improving reliable access for domestic and agricultural use. The dam will serve 16,592 hectares, including 1,839 hectares under khushkaba rainwater harvesting systems.
Watershed management interventions, including afforestation, soil conservation, and check dam construction, will enhance flood control and reduce land degradation. These efforts aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of water resources in the region.
The project is co-financed by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, funded by the Government of Japan through ADB, and the High-Level Technology Fund. It seeks to establish a climate-resilient and sustainable water management system in Balochistan.
Agriculture forms the backbone of Balochistan’s economy, contributing nearly two-thirds of its output and employing 60% of residents. Frequent droughts, limited water management capacity, and climate vulnerabilities have increased regional poverty. The project is expected to improve livelihoods and secure long-term benefits for the province.
