Khaleda Zia’s Health Reported As Very Critical, Family Urges Prayers

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, 80, is in a very critical condition after being admitted to the hospital on November 23. She is being treated for a lung infection in the intensive care unit, party members confirmed.

Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) told reporters Friday that “doctors have told us her condition is very critical.” Senior party leaders and supporters visited the hospital Saturday for updates on her health.

Zia has a history of serious medical issues. According to reports, she suffers from heart problems, liver and kidney complications, diabetes, lung issues, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses. She has a permanent pacemaker and has previously undergone stenting for her heart.

Her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has been living in London since 2008, requested that Bangladeshis pray for her recovery. In a social media post Saturday, he said: “We express our heartfelt thanks for all your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia.”

Rahman explained he could not return to Bangladesh due to circumstances beyond his control. “I share the same deep longing as any child to have my mother’s touch in moments of crisis,” he said.

Interim BNP leader Muhammad Yunus also highlighted the national significance of her recovery. “During this transitional period to democracy, Khaleda Zia is a source of utmost inspiration for the nation. Her recovery is very important for the country,” he said.

Despite her fragile health, Zia intends to participate in the upcoming elections expected in February 2026, with BNP considered a frontrunner. Her supporters and party members continue to urge prayers and hope for improvement in her very critical condition.

The nation remains attentive as Zia’s health is closely monitored by doctors and party leaders, reflecting her enduring influence on Bangladesh’s political landscape.
