Karachi witnessed a night of panic and anger after a 3-year-old boy disappeared into an uncovered manhole near NIPA Chowrangi late Sunday. The tragic moment, now widely discussed as the case in which an old Boy falls into a drainage line, has sparked outrage across the city.
The incident occurred during a routine family outing. According to the parents, little Ibrahim slipped from his fatherโs hand while they were walking toward their motorcycle. Within seconds, the old Boy falls straight into a wide, uncovered hole. His parents watched in shock, unable to save him as he vanished from sight.
Rescue efforts began quickly, but workers soon faced major obstacles. The strong water flow inside the line slowed the search. Teams also lacked advanced machinery. Rescue workers said no government officials were present at the scene. They added that the few machines that arrived left shortly afterward, leaving teams without help.
As time passed with no progress, frustration grew among residents. Local people brought their own heavy machinery and continued digging through the night. Traffic on University Road near NIPA Chowrangi and Hassan Square came to a halt as citizens blocked the road and burned tires. Protesters demanded accountability, calling the situation a โcriminal act of negligence.โ The case of the old Boy falls incident added fuel to the public anger.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab ordered an inquiry and promised strict action against those responsible. He assured the family that all available resources would be used in the search.
However, the issue became more complicated when Karachiโs Deputy Mayor accused โmiscreant elementsโ of disrupting the rescue operation for political purposes. Meanwhile, the Water Corporation stated that the manhole does not belong to its network. Officials claimed there is no sewer line or official manhole at that exact point.
The family remains heartbroken. They said the child slipped from his fatherโs hand for only a moment โ a moment that changed their lives forever.
