Samsung Launches First Multi-Folding Smartphone, Galaxy Z TriFold

Samsung Electronics unveiled its first multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, on Tuesday. The launch marks Samsungโ€™s effort to strengthen its position in the growing foldable smartphone market.

Priced at around 3.59 million won ($2,440), the TriFold unfolds into a 253.1 mm (10-inch) display using three panels. It is nearly 25% larger than Samsungโ€™s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7, highlighting the companyโ€™s focus on innovation and premium features.

โ€œI believe the foldable market will continue to grow, and the TriFold could act as a catalyst for more explosive growth in key parts of the segment,โ€ said Alex Lim, Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President and head of the Korea Sales & Marketing Office. Lim added that the device targets customers specifically seeking a multi-folding experience rather than mass-market buyers.

The TriFold is produced in South Korea and will go on sale domestically on December 12. Samsung plans to launch the device in China, Singapore, Taiwan, and the UAE later this year, with a U.S. release expected in the first quarter of next year. The phone features Samsungโ€™s largest battery in a flagship device and supports super-fast charging, reaching 50% in just 30 minutes.

Analysts note that while the TriFold is technologically advanced, it is unlikely to be a volume-driving device. Ryu Young-ho, senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, stated, โ€œThe trifold is a first-generation product and Samsung is likely to focus on showcasing technology rather than selling large volumes.โ€

Competition in the foldable smartphone sector is intensifying. Huawei launched a three-way folding phone last September, and Apple is expected to enter the foldable segment next year. Despite this, high prices and production limits may keep foldable phones as a niche category.

Samsungโ€™s foldable market share jumped to 64% in Q3 2025, up from 9% in the previous quarter, according to Counterpoint Research. Analysts predict the foldable smartphone market will grow 14% this year, with annual growth of around 30% in 2026 and 2027 as more competitors enter the segment.
