LAHORE โ The Punjab government has allowed teenagers aged 16 to legally apply for bike licenses. The decision came after viral videos of minors detained for traffic violations sparked public outrage.
Reports indicate that Punjab launched one of its strictest traffic crackdowns in recent years. Fines have surged by up to 900 percent, and police are issuing FIRs and impounding vehicles of anyone driving without a license or helmet.
The controversy escalated after videos showed minors, including school students, allegedly being handcuffed during arrests. Many parents feared these actions could negatively impact their childrenโs futures.
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz reacted on social media, condemning the handcuffing of minors. She announced two key decisions: teenagers aged 16 can now apply for motorcycle bike licenses, and helmet violators will receive warning challans instead of FIRs.
However, Punjabโs Chief Traffic Officer clarified that no official notification regarding the new licensing age has been issued yet. He noted that viral videos of handcuffed minors are outdated. According to him, the proper procedure involves impounding the vehicle and completing legal documentation without restraining children.
Despite these clarifications, traffic enforcement remains strict. Adults over 18 driving without valid licenses will continue to face FIRs with no leniency.
Authorities urge all drivers to comply with traffic laws. Those without proper bike licenses risk losing their vehicles and facing legal consequences if stopped by police.
