India is facing an unusual statistical setback in international cricket as a rare Coin toss curse continues to trouble the team. The side has now lost 20 consecutive tosses in one-day internationals (ODIs), a streak with odds of more than one million to one.
Stand-in captain KL Rahul expressed confusion over the ongoing Coin toss curse, which dates back to the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. At that time, Rohit Sharma was leading the team. Since then, Indian captains have repeatedly failed to win the toss, regardless of who has stepped in.
Rahul admitted he has even practiced flipping a coin, but the results remain unchanged. After losing the toss again during the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, he noted that the pressure of the situation has increased. He added that India hopes to break the streak in the final ODI in Visakhapatnam.
The probability of losing 20 tosses in a row is an extraordinary 1,048,576 to one. Despite this anomaly, three different Indian captains — Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul — have all been unable to end the sequence. India last won a toss on November 15, 2023, during the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai.
Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar offered insight into the trend, explaining that captains’ choices vary. He said that Aiden Markram may prefer calling heads, while Temba Bavuma might choose tails, making predictions impossible. Gavaskar questioned how Rahul could prepare for what the opposing captain would call.
Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn added a humorous anecdote, recalling that Faf du Plessis once asked Bavuma to toss the coin for him after his own string of losses. Even then, Bavuma lost the toss, adding another layer to the unpredictable nature of the game.
