Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India for the first time since the Ukraine war. The visit highlights growing strategic and economic ties between the two nations.
Putin visits India with a delegation that includes Defence Minister Andrei Belousov. Media reports suggest discussions may include a deal on fighter jets and advanced military equipment.
During his visit, Putin is scheduled for a private dinner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. A formal summit and a business gathering are planned for the following day. Key topics include defence cooperation, trade relations, and energy imports.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russiaโs advanced S-400 air defence systems are โan important part of the agenda.โ India currently operates three S-400 units, with delivery of two more delayed due to the Ukraine war and Western sanctions. Media reports also suggest possible co-production of Russiaโs Su-57 fighter jets.
India remains one of the worldโs top arms importers, with Russia historically its main supplier. However, Russiaโs share of Indian arms imports fell from 76% in 2009-13 to 36% in 2019-23, according to SIPRI. India is also expanding domestic defence production to reduce dependence on imports.
Energy imports are another major discussion point. India has been a major buyer of Russian oil, saving billions and supporting Moscow after European sanctions. Recent reductions in crude purchases reflect pressure from U.S. tariffs on Indian goods following oil deals.
Peskov said Russia is unconcerned about U.S. tariffs, stating, โOur focus is to maintain and increase bilateral business with India.โ Experts note that while energy purchases may decrease, strategic ties remain strong due to mutual interests.
Bilateral trade between Russia and India reached $68.7 billion in 2024-25, with India pushing for greater market access for pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and services. Analysts describe the visit as a chance to reset relations amid global geopolitical shifts.
Observers say Putin visits India at a โcritical moment,โ sending a message of strategic importance. The summit reinforces the stability of Moscow-Delhi ties while addressing regional and global concerns, including the situation in Ukraine.
