Hamid Mir Hints at Possible PTI Ban and Treason Case Against Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Senior journalist Hamid Mir has raised concerns about a possible formal ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) amid growing political tensions.

Speaking on Geo News Tuesday night, Hamid Mir said statements from federal officials and state ministers suggest that a decision to ban PTI may already be in motion. He added that a treason case could also be filed against PTI leader Imran Khan, his sisters, and other party members.

The comments came hours after a press conference held by Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Information & Broadcasting Barrister Danyal Chaudhry and Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik. During the briefing, Malik said certain individuals continued to spread misleading narratives against Pakistan, causing harm to the countryโ€™s political stability and youth.

Chaudhry added that PTIโ€™s politics are built on false narratives, which he claimed undermined Pakistanโ€™s reputation during the partyโ€™s tenure. He accused the party of attempting to damage the countryโ€™s current economic progress.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Assembly passed a resolution calling for action against Imran Khan and PTI for allegedly being โ€œanti-state.โ€ The resolution followed remarks by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who criticized Khan for spreading โ€œanti-armyโ€ rhetoric and described it as a national security threat.

PML-N MPA Tahir Pervaiz introduced the resolution, which passed amid a boycott by PTI lawmakers. The resolution urged that PTI and its leaders be held accountable under the law and receive appropriate punishment if found guilty.

It is notable that the federal government had attempted to ban PTI in 2024 and initiated Article 6 proceedings against Khan, former president Dr. Arif Alvi, and ex-NA deputy speaker Qasim Suri. However, the ban was never implemented.

Hamid Mir emphasized that the situation reflects a growing crackdown on the party, warning that legal and political developments could intensify in the coming weeks.
