The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has secured a decisive victory in the PS-9 Shikarpur by-election. The seat fell vacant after the death of former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Returning Officer released Form 47, confirming that PPP candidate Agha Shehbaz Khan Durrani won the election with 72,964 votes. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) candidate Maulana Rashidullah Shah finished second, receiving 9,489 votes.
The voter turnout in PS-9 Shikarpur was recorded at 31.68 percent. A total of 88,017 votes were cast across 178 polling stations. Out of these, 84 polling stations were marked sensitive, while 54 were highly sensitive.
The constituency has 277,792 registered voters, including 148,128 men and 129,245 women. Strict security measures were in place to ensure smooth polling. Over 3,000 police personnel were deployed, with Rangers and the Quick Response Force on high alert.
Election observers noted that the by-election process was largely peaceful. Officials emphasized that the PPP wins reflect strong voter support in the region. The party’s repeated victories in Shikarpur highlight its political influence and organizational strength.
Political analysts believe the PS-9 result reinforces the PPP’s standing in Sindh ahead of upcoming provincial elections. Despite a low voter turnout, the margin of victory shows the party’s solid voter base.
The ECP confirmed that the election results are final and no major complaints were reported. Agha Shehbaz Khan Durrani is expected to take his oath as the new member of the Sindh Assembly soon.
With this win, PPP continues to strengthen its position in Sindh, while opposition parties will need to reassess strategies in future elections. Observers say the PS-9 by-election serves as an important indicator of local political trends.
