A tragic incident in Zaman Town claimed the life of an elderly man, as CCTV footage circulated on social media showing him walking with his bicycle before suddenly falling into an uncovered manhole. Witnesses said he disappeared from view moments later.
Residents reported that the area lacked street lighting, which delayed the rescue efforts. Unfortunately, the senior citizen dies at the scene due to the accident. Locals criticized the authorities for failing to install protective covers or barriers around the manhole.
Police confirmed the deceased was a resident of Zaman Town, Sector 34/3. Citizens have demanded immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future, citing negligence in maintaining road safety.
This incident is not isolated. Earlier this month, a three-year-old child, Ibrahim, fell into an uncovered manhole near Nipa Roundabout while leaving a nearby store. Rescue 1122 teams faced difficulties retrieving the child’s body due to a narrow sewage line, and the boy was recovered almost 15 hours later.
The child’s body was discovered by a local garbage collector, Tanveer, who handed it over to the police. Tanveer later claimed he was slapped by police officers while being questioned about his role at the scene. Public outrage over the treatment of Tanveer led Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East, Dr. Farrukh Raza, to honor him with a cash reward, flowers, and a garland for his efforts.
Authorities are under pressure to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially in poorly lit areas, to prevent further tragedies. Locals continue to demand proper street lighting and manhole covers to avoid incidents like the one where the senior citizen dies.
