WaterGenix: Pakistan’s Innovative Clean Energy Solution for Water Scarcity

WaterGenix Pakistan’s Innovative Clean Energy Solution for Water Scarcity

A homegrown startup from Rawalpindi, WaterGenix, is transforming the way communities access clean water in Pakistan. Founded by Muhammad Shahwaiz Akram, the startup was recognized as the Runner-up in the Tameer Awards’ Clean Energy Solution category. WaterGenix is developing Superhydrophilic Photothermic Nanocapsules (SPHN) for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH), a technology that captures water from the air and releases it using sunlight.

Unlike traditional methods like fog nets or energy-intensive desalination systems, these SPHN nanocapsules absorb 3–5 times their dry weight in water. They release it within 30 minutes using natural sunlight. This makes the system portable, reusable, and easy to integrate into households, agriculture, or disaster-relief kits. Communities in low-humidity regions can now access clean water reliably.

WaterGenix bridges the gap between lab research and real-world water needs. By combining nanotechnology with photothermal principles, the system reduces dependence on borewells and electricity-heavy desalination. It provides safe water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation while promoting environmentally responsible practices.

The startup’s technology has the potential to impact over 70 million people living in water-stressed areas of Pakistan. In addition to immediate water access, WaterGenix supports climate-resilient agriculture and helps communities reduce reliance on energy-intensive water systems. Its modular and scalable approach ensures long-term sustainability for both households and farms.

Tameer, Wafi Energy’s flagship initiative, has played a key role in supporting WaterGenix. The Runner-up recognition at the 12th Tameer Awards highlights the startup’s innovation, scalability, and social impact. By turning air into a reliable source of clean water, WaterGenix demonstrates how clean energy solutions can empower communities and improve quality of life.
