Punjab to Launch Film Development Authority to Boost Local Filmmaking

The Punjab government has announced plans to set up the Punjab Film Development Authority to promote local filmmaking and attract investment from both domestic and international sources. The move aims to modernize the provincial film industry and create a structured environment for filmmakers.

The Punjab Film Development Authority Act 2025 was presented in the Punjab Assembly on December 19. The proposed law provides a framework for licensing, regulations, and operational support, making the filmmaking process smoother and more efficient. Filmmakers will have access to one-window services to simplify production procedures.

Attracting Investment and Strengthening Infrastructure

The new authority aims to encourage both local filmmaking and foreign investment by offering incentives and support for film production. Authorities believe these steps will make Punjab a competitive destination for filmmakers and reduce dependence on external production hubs.

Plans include establishing modern film studios, film cities, and post-production facilities across the province. These infrastructure developments are expected to support high-quality production and promote growth in the film sector.

Supporting Talent and Funding Opportunities

The Punjab Film Development Authority will also focus on nurturing emerging filmmakers and artists. Training programs, grants, subsidies, and other funding mechanisms will be introduced to financially support new talent. The authority will address industry complaints and provide governance, ensuring smoother operations for all stakeholders.

Next Steps in the Legislative Process

The bill has been sent to the relevant committee for a two-month review. After the committee’s approval, it will be presented again in the Punjab Assembly. The law will come into effect once the Governor of Punjab signs it.
