Two police killed in Moscow overnight when an explosive device detonated near a suspicious person, Russiaโs Investigative Committee confirmed on Wednesday.
The explosion occurred around 1:30 am local time near a service vehicle as officers tried to stop the suspect. The blast killed the two police officers instantly, authorities said.
Investigators said the area was immediately cordoned off, and forensic teams are carrying out medical and explosive examinations at the scene. Television images showed a heavy police presence following the incident.
The blast happened near the site where Russian Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed on Monday by an explosive device placed under his parked car. Sarvarov had led the General Staffโs training department.
โThe device was triggered as the officers approached the suspect,โ the Investigative Committee said in an official statement. Earlier, a Telegram post by investigators confirmed ongoing inspections and analysis at the location.
Moscow authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect, and no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Since the beginning of Russiaโs military actions in Ukraine in February 2022, several attacks targeting Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures have occurred within Russia and in occupied territories. Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some attacks but has not commented on the recent incidents.
The deaths of the two police killed in this latest blast mark another tragic event in Moscow amid ongoing security concerns. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements to identify the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
Residents reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing emergency services rush to the scene. Officials urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue.
