The Arif Habib Consortium has officially acquired Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), winning the privatization bid with Rs135 billion. The group purchased 75 percent of the national carrier’s shares, surpassing the Lucky Consortium’s Rs134 billion offer.
Authorities confirmed that PIA will maintain its name and continue operating under its iconic logo. They assured that the airline’s historical and symbolic significance will not be affected, even under new ownership.
New investors will have the authority to implement administrative and financial reforms. However, matters related to PIA’s national character, brand, and identity will maintain their protected status. Officials emphasized that the airline’s legacy and public recognition are a priority.
The government will receive Rs10.2 billion in cash immediately under the terms of the acquisition. This marks the first large-scale privatization in Pakistan in over twenty years. Analysts estimate it could save taxpayers around Rs35 billion annually in subsidies and operational costs.
Fauji Fertilizer Company will join as a strategic partner in the consortium. Representatives said the collaboration would help accelerate PIA’s revival and modernize its operations. The consortium plans to invest Rs125 billion in PIA over the next year, aiming to expand the airline’s fleet from 18 to 62 aircraft.
Officials highlighted efforts to improve passenger experience and provide employees with better platforms and opportunities. “Our focus will be to maintain a strong operational structure while enhancing services for travelers,” said Arif Habib Group representatives.
The acquisition signals a significant step in transforming PIA into a modern, competitive airline while preserving its status as Pakistan’s flagship carrier. The consortium’s strategy combines financial investment, modernization, and careful protection of the airline’s national identity.
