Net Metering Applications Continue as DISCOs Move to Online Registration

Pakistan’s electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) have clarified that registration for net metering applications has not been stopped. Consumers are now required to submit applications exclusively through the online portal.

Sources within DISCOs confirmed that the shift to online registration is designed to make the process faster and more efficient. The Net Metering Portal allows applicants to receive instant registration numbers and application receipt dates immediately after submission. This modernization aims to streamline services for solar energy users across the country.

The Ministry of Energy recently revised Pakistan’s net metering policy to adjust incentives for solar power consumers. Under the updated system, electricity exported to the grid will be compensated at Rs11 per unit, down from the previous Rs25.98 per unit. Solar agreements will now last five years, and excess electricity can no longer offset total consumption; instead, fixed per-unit compensation determined by NEPRA will apply.

Additionally, the government introduced a licensing requirement for all solar installations up to 25 kilowatts, ending prior exemptions for domestic, commercial, and industrial users. Officials cited operational and financial pressures on the power sector as the reason for these changes but assured that most solar users would not face major difficulties.

Experts say the online registration system and updated policy are aimed at encouraging transparency, efficiency, and growth in Pakistan’s renewable energy sector. By moving applications online, DISCOs can handle requests more quickly, reduce manual errors, and maintain better records for policy compliance.
