Pakistan Remembers Benazir Bhutto On Her 18th Death Anniversary

Pakistan observes the Death Anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on December 27. She was martyred in a gun and bomb attack while returning from an election rally at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, in 2007.

Preparations for the main commemorative event at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto have been completed. Security has been tightened with over 8,500 police personnel, Rangers, and other security agencies deployed to ensure the safety of VVIPs and the public.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and senior PPP leaders are expected to pay tribute to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Hundreds of thousands of supporters are anticipated to attend the programme from across the country.

Caravans of party workers and supporters have already reached the venue via buses, trucks, cars, and on foot. The event is set to honor Bhutto’s legacy and her contribution to democracy in Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto’s assassination in 2007 shocked the nation. The attack not only claimed her life but also killed several party activists, triggering nationwide unrest and causing billions of rupees in damages. Her martyrdom remains a defining moment in Pakistan’s political history.

Bhutto, known for her dynamic leadership, had worked to strengthen democracy, including signing the Charter of Democracy with Nawaz Sharif in 2006 to ensure smooth political transitions. Her return from exile in October 2007 had been met with enthusiasm, though her life remained under threat.

The Karsaz attack earlier that year, which killed 139 people and injured over 450, had failed to intimidate Bhutto. Despite these threats, she continued her political mission until her tragic assassination.

On this Death Anniversary, Pakistan remembers Benazir Bhutto’s struggle for democracy and her enduring impact on both national and international politics. The tribute at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto reflects the nation’s respect and admiration for the late leader.

Her legacy continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike, making each Death Anniversary a solemn reminder of her sacrifices and vision for a democratic Pakistan.
